Today, Dublin Bus received a Road Safety Authority (RSA) ‘Leading Lights in Road Safety’ Award in the Public Sector Category for its commitment to promoting road safety within its organisation and for making a significant contribution to safer roads. Winners were announced at a special awards ceremony which took place in Croke Park.

Now in their tenth year the Road Safety Authority’s ‘Leading Lights in Road Safety Awards’ recognise and honour the contribution made by people nationwide in reducing deaths and serious injuries on our roads. This year over 160 nominations were received from all over Ireland for individuals, schools, businesses, community groups, colleges and organisations. Winning entries were chosen by a panel of high profile individuals. In recognising the substantial growth in cycling numbers in recent years, Dublin Bus explored innovative methods to further improve driver awareness in relation to cyclists and to promote the importance of cyclist safety to a wider audience. Dublin Bus commissioned a cyclist safety awareness video which now forms an integral part of ongoing driver training. Dublin Bus liaised closely with a number of key stakeholders to develop the video, including the Road safety Authority, Dublin City Council and Dublin Cycling Campaign. Dublin Bus also took the opportunity to engage and educate a wider audience and to target those who are new to cycling or less experienced by visiting a number of the larger third level colleges throughout the Greater Dublin Area.

Dublin Bus Chief Executive, Ray Coyne said “We are committed to protecting the safety of our employees, customers and those affected by our activities such as other road users. We want to ensure that all our drivers are more aware of cyclist behaviours and key scenarios that can potentially result in conflict and also increase the awareness of sharing road space safely across the general cycling population in a meaningful way”.

Dublin Bus is the largest public transport provider in Ireland carrying 128 million customers in 2016 across 110 routes, including 19 high-frequency routes that criss-cross the city. Dublin Bus employs 3,550 people. In 2014 the company won the CPC Training Organisation of the Year at the Road Safety Authority’s Leading Lights in Road Safety Awards.
