Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann employees lose 25 stone and raise over €8,000 for Irish Cancer Society.

The Irish Cancer Society was presented with a cheque for €8,453.00 by Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann employees who took part in a weight loss challenge to raise funds for the charity. The groups lost a cumulative 25 stone and presented the cheque at their final weigh in.

In March a team of 20 people from each company set themselves a target of raising €2,000 and if that goal was reached their companies agreed to match it. The Challenge was initiated with the dual purpose of raising funds for charity and kicking off the New Year on a healthy note.

All participants fundraised with a sponsorship cards and there was a 5k fun run/walk in the

Cold Cut Sports & Social Club, which was €20 for each participate to enter.
At the presentation Kevin Dempsey of the Irish Cancer society said “At the Irish Cancer Society we are delighted at the amazing support from the Bus Eireann and Dublin Bus staff. The money will help to raise funds for cancer research, information and support to families across Dublin and Ireland. Not only have they raised an amazing amount in donations but have also helped to spread the word about cancer and the importance of healthy living.  We hope that their inspiration will encourage more people to be proactive about their health and help us achieve our mission – to eliminate cancer.”

Chief Executive of Dublin Bus Paddy Doherty said; “We are delighted to support our employees in raising funds for the Irish Cancer Society. Congratulations to all who got involved and put in hours of hard work to achieve their weight loss goals. I understand this will be an annual event and I look forward to seeing more people getting involved in next year’s challenge.”

Also commenting Chief Executive of Bus Eireann Martin Nolan said “Bus Éireann are proud to support the Irish Cancer Society and commend our staff for their involvement in such a good cause. The €8,453.00 raised through the Charity Challenge will be put to good use to support those who have been affected by cancer. We wish the Irish Cancer Society the best in their endeavours, and are happy to see our staff taking part in such good initiatives.”
