The Snapper

The Snapper
The Gate Theatre
Thursday 6 June to Saturday 24 August 2019
Doors open at 19.00

In 2018 the Gate Theatre commissioned Roddy Doyle to write a stage version of his much loved Dublin novel The Snapper. This new adaptation played to packed houses in 2018, bringing in new audiences who had never visited the Gate before, and now the production will return to the Gate stage this summer.
The play offers a warm, frank and wickedly funny account of family life and pregnancy in Northside Dublin in the 1980s. The stage production at the Gate brings The Snapper back home to the Rotunda Hospital (where Sharon’s baby ‘the snapper’ is born) which sits right next door to the Gate.

Gate Theatre

The Gate Theatre has been, artistically and architecturally, a landmark building for over 250 years. Established as a theatre company in 1928 by Hilton Edwards and Micheál MacLiammóir, the Gate offered Dublin audiences an introduction to the world of European and American theatre and also to classics from the modern and Irish repertoire. It was with the Gate that Orson Welles, James Mason and Michael Gambon began their prodigious acting careers.
